Frequently Asked Questions

When does the next Training begin?

The next training is tentatively planned to begin in September 2022.

I have not yet taken the Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids Online Course which is a prerequisite for this Training. Can I take it simultaneously?

If you think you MAY want to take this Coach Training when it begins next September, you are strongly encouraged to take the Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids Online Course when it is offered in January or April. It is NOT recommended that you try to take them simultaneously, because you will simply not be able to invest enough time.

What is the time commitment?

About four hours per week. You can expect to spend two hours each week listening to audios (The weekly coach training lecture plus past Office Hour recordings), and at least another hour reading and engaging with the current Membership Spotlight In addition, expect to spend an additional 4 hours each month listening to or participating in the Coach Training Q & A Calls and current Office Hours and writing a short homework assignment. Finally, since you have access to the full Membership resources, you could easily spend many more hours each week listening to Dr. Laura's Audio Library, to learn from her answers to parents' questions on virtually every topic.

If you are in the Interactive or Intensive Tracks, you will be asked to coach a client on a weekly basis for at least a month, towards the end of the training. At that time, you will meet four times for about an hour with a peer collaborator, where you apply the concepts in the training to your actual case. Intensive track trainees are also asked to do a case presentation to the larger group. And you will have solo meetings with Dr. Laura as well!

How do I access this Training?

Everything is online with the exception of the June Retreat in New York City that is included in the Intensive Training.

For the Educator/Introductory Track, everything is on your own schedule, because the monthly live Q & A sessions are recorded. However, if you register for the Interactive or Intensive Track, you will want to attend at least some of the Coach Training Q & A sessions live to take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions.

When is the monthly live Coaching Training with Q & A?

The Live Coaching Sessions with Dr. Laura are on the fourth Thursday of each month from 4 to 6pm ET. That's at 9pm in London and at 6am in Australia -- not ideal, but it allows everyone to make it. If you can't attend live, the sessions will always be recorded.

I am already in the Success Path to Peaceful Parenting, which I see is included as part of the training. Do I get credit for my payment for the Success Path?

Yes! We will extend your Success Path subscription so that you are not charged for the months while you are in this training.

Can I earn CE credits for this training?

Sorry, there at this point we cannot offer CE credits for this training. We do hope to arrange CE credits in the future. But we think that the benefits of this training to your work as a Coach will far outweigh the lack of CE credits.

How does the billing work?

All of the Tracks are set up with payment plans to make them more affordable. You will pay the first month when you register for the Training. After that, your card will be charged the monthly amount for the number of months indicated. Your card info is kept by a certified third party billing service called Stripe. We never see your card. Please note that once you pass the refund period you are consenting to pay the entire amount due, even if you decide to end your participation before the program is completed.

Are there scholarships available for this training?

Yes, there are a small number of PARTIAL scholarships available for the Parent Educator Track. These are reserved for practitioners who are already working in communities of color. Please send an email to DrLauraMarkham@AhaParenting.com.

Please note that all of the training tracks are set up with payment plans to make them more affordable, and that the prices are already discounted compared to comparable trainings. This is a professional training, which means that you are investing in your future as an Educator or Coach. The Interactive Training allows you to interact directly over many months with Dr. Laura Markham, including a solo mentoring session with her. The Intensive Training allows you to engage with her in a live retreat, as well as to receive ongoing tailored feedback about your work and to receive a Coach listing on Dr. Laura's website, which gives you years of client referrals. And the Educator level gives you the amazing value of six months of training by an internationally recognized expert at a price that is very affordable even for a coach just beginning in the business.

Can international students participate?

Yes, absolutely! We have many international students.

I know Dr. Laura Markham’s book Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids covers ages 0-9 but how about this training?

This is a training on coaching parents who have children of all ages using the peaceful parenting approach. If you look at the AhaParenting.com website, you will see that Dr. Laura does speak to parents of babies through teens.

What is the structure of the Training? Is there a syllabus?

Because Dr. Laura's work is so extensive in addressing Peaceful Parenting, her writing forms the foundation of the initial "syllabus."

You will begin immediately reviewing (or introducing yourself to) the following materials, which thoroughly cover The Peaceful Parenting approach.

  • The Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids Course
  • The Success Path to Peaceful Parenting - Spotlights on Helping Your Child with Anxiety, Resilience, Self Regulation, Setting Limits, Special Time etc.
  • Dr. Laura's three books: Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids, Peaceful Parent, Happy Siblings, and the Workbook.

After this, you are encouraged to begin watching recordings of Dr. Laura coaching parents. Coaching is modeled using Dr. Laura's Audio Library (60 hours of Dr. Laura answering parent questions about a wide range of topics), and the Success Path Office Hours Library (30 videos of Dr. Laura coaching parents during Workshops and Office Hours). Again, you have access to these even before the Training begins, because you receive immediate access to the Success Path Membership. Please keep a running list of questions that arise for you as you watch these coaching sessions.

We have monthly live Q & A sessions during which Trainees in the Interactive and Intensive Tracks ask Dr. Laura questions about how to apply the peaceful parenting approach to coaching families. Trainees in the Introductory Track observe these Q and A sessions and are able to participate via the chat. All sessions are recorded for convenient listening.

All Trainees are encouraged to participate fully in the Facebook Support Group for the Training. Admins will bring any questions that remain unanswered in the group to Dr. Laura in the Q & A session.

When the Training begins, you will also have access to the lectures in Dr. Laura's Coach Training Library. You can see a list in the FAQs of some of the topics. More will be added during the Training as they are requested by Trainees.

Finally, as questions and topics are raised during the Q and A sessions each month, Dr. Laura will refer to various books, articles and research studies on psychology and coaching that Trainees can pursue for more information. These will be compiled each month into a "syllabus" for the month to make these resources easier to track.

What Topics are Covered in the Training Audio Library?

Lectures are released every Monday and are front-loaded for the initial months of the Training. The schedule is below, but keep in mind that more lectures will be added during the Training, as the needs of the Trainees become clear!

  • 9/23- What exactly IS Peaceful Parenting Coaching?
  • 9/30- How to make intake forms work for you.
  • 10/7- The first session- Forging a bond and giving hope.
  • 10/14- The second session- Finding a win.
  • 10/21- Preventive Maintenance Tools in every session.
  • 10/28- Teaching parents how to respond to their child's misbehavior.
  • 11/4- Teaching parents to use emotion-coaching with their child.
  • 11/11- Double-click to understand what’s really going on.
  • 11/18- Helping parents articulate their resistance so you can work with it.
  • 11/25- Helping parents learn to self-regulate.
  • 12/2- Helping couples navigate disagreements about parenting.
  • 12/9- When a child is hitting.
  • 12/16- When siblings are fighting.

Do participants need to have a child psychology background to understand the concepts and apply them in Coaching Practice?

No. This training will give you enough insight into child psychology and family dynamics to understand and apply the concepts and techniques in Coaching Practice.

What is the application process for the Intensive Training?

Once you register for the Intensive Training, you will receive an email with the application. Since you will have a listing on the AhaParenting.com website, we need to be sure that you have enough background in the field for us to recommend you to clients. If for any reason you are not accepted into the Intensive program, you will be offered a place in the Interactive Track. If you decline, your payment will be promptly refunded.

I'm having a hard time deciding which track is appropriate for me.

All three tracks provide a solid grounding in the Peaceful Parenting approach, and how to apply it to a variety of family situations. All three tracks give you extensive examples of handling a range of parent questions. All three tracks offer audios, printables and other tools to address the most important challenges facing parents. All three tracks guide you through a syllabus, reading list, and lectures from Dr. Laura, on your own schedule. All three training cohorts participate in the same Networking and Support Group for Coaching Trainees on Facebook. Finally, all three tracks allow you to interact directly with Dr. Laura to ask parenting questions as part of her Success Path to Peaceful Parenting Membership Office Hours, but remember that there are many parents asking questions and the focus of the Office Hours is on parenting as opposed to Coach Training.

While the Educator/Introductory Track allows you to observe the monthly Coach Training Q & A, your participation will be limited to the chat. The Interactive and Intensive Tracks give you the opportunity to ask questions during those sessions, so you have direct interaction with Dr. Laura and can ask your questions about coaching families. The Interactive and Intensive Tracks also offer supervised Peer Collaboration Learning opportunities, a live seminar with Dr. Laura on the business aspects of Coaching, a private mentoring session with Dr. Laura.

Finally, the Intensive Track also offers you additional Supervisory consultations with Dr. Laura Markham.

Is the content on parenting similar for each track?

Yes, the content is exactly the same for each track. It is quite extensive, and how much of it you take advantage of will depend on the time you are able to put in.

Since the content is the same, why are the Interactive and Intensive tracks so much more of an investment?

The Interactive and Intensive tracks give you direct access to Dr. Laura, and more professional development opportunities. The Intensive track also gives you a listing on the AhaParenting.com website, which can be worth the entire cost of the training.

In addition, the Certification you receive for each track is different. If you take the Parent Educator & Intro Coach Track, you can describe yourself as having completed the five month Parent Educator & Intro Coach Training with Dr. Laura. If you take the Interactive Track, you can describe yourself as having completed the seven month Parenting Coach Training with Dr. Laura. If you take the Intensive Track, you can describe yourself as being certified by Dr. Laura as a Peaceful Parenting Coach. The Certificate of Completion and the digital badge that you will be given for use on your website also looks different.

If I take the Interactive or Intensive Training, what professional opportunities would make the financial investment worth it?

The Interactive and Intensive Tracks are for professionals who want more skills and expertise to become excellent parenting coaches. You will be able to advertise on your website that you trained with Dr. Laura, which is a powerful endorsement for parents. Intensive Graduates also receive a listing in Dr. Laura's Coaching Directory, which serves as a source of client referrals. The AhaParenting.com website attracts an audience of over a half million parents every month.

I don't intend to become a parent coach, but want to weave the peaceful parenting theory and practices into my current (related) work with parents and/or children. Which track would be most suitable?

The Educator track will be perfect for you. There is no need to pay extra for the professional development opportunities offered by the Interactive and Intensive tracks.

Does this training allow me to offer my own Peaceful Parenting Courses using Dr. Laura's materials?

If you have to use Dr. Laura's materials, you are not quite ready to offer your own Course yet! But yes, you can offer groups for people enrolled in Dr. Laura's Peaceful Parent, Happy Kids Course (and for which you receive all the proceeds.) When you're ready to develop your own materials, you can offer your own courses.

Does this training allow me to call myself a Peaceful Parenting Educator or Coach?

If you take the Parent Educator & Intro Coach Track, you can describe yourself as having completed the five month Parent Educator & Intro Coach Training with Dr. Laura. If you take the Interactive Track, you can describe yourself as having completed the seven month Parenting Coach Training with Dr. Laura. If you take the Intensive Track, you can describe yourself as being certified by Dr. Laura as a Peaceful Parenting Coach.

When will this Training be offered again?

It is likely that this Training will be offered again every September, but that is not guaranteed. In addition, the content, prices and tracks are subject to revision.

I want to start with the Educator Track. Is there any possibility of extending the learning from this track later on, or would I need to start all over with the next Track?

Presuming that this Training will be offered in coming years, we will engineer a somewhat discounted experience for Graduates of the Introductory or Interactive tracks who want to enroll in more advanced tracks in the future. You could expect that to mean that you would receive a discount on the Training, but it is unlikely to equal the amount of your outlay for the original track, since there will still be costs associated with your enrollment. So your total expenditure to train this way would likely be more than if you just started with the more expensive track. In addition, you will need to go through the entire training time period again , although obviously you will not have to repeat work you have completed already. (And you would have extra time to engage with the materials and to ask Dr. Laura questions, so your learning would likely be greater!)

Is it possible to change which Training track you're in once the Training starts?

We will accommodate that if we can if you make your request within the first thirty days. But there are limited Intensive and Interactive spots which may all be taken by the time registration closes.

I have no experience as a Coach or Counselor but I love Peaceful Parenting. Will this training make me into a Counselor?

No. This is a wonderful and extensive training and it will transform your ability to work with parents and understand children. But it cannot make you into a counselor if you have no other experience. It should be viewed as a supplement to other experience working with parents and/or children.

How will I prove that I received this training?

You will receive a certificate suitable for framing, and a digital badge to use on your website.

Will there be renewal fees for the certification or is this a lifetime certification?

This is a Lifetime Certification! However, Dr. Laura reserves the right, at her sole discretion, to revoke her certification in the event of allegations of behavior that is unethical or unprofessional or otherwise reflects badly on her or other certified coaches.

What is your refund policy?

You have Dr. Laura's 100% Satisfaction Guarantee. If you do all the work for the first month and honestly don't see the value, please write to DrLauraMarkham@AhaParenting.com, attaching your completed coursework for the first month, and we will issue you a refund, less 5% of all fees paid (which is what we pay out in merchant fees when you make a payment or receive a refund). To be eligible for a refund, you must submit your request within thirty days of the first live meeting of the Training.
